We throw so many things away that can still be used. Instead of throwing these things in the garbage repurpose them in the garden.

8 Items To Repurpose In The Garden

I love finding uses for items that are getting thrown away. My garden is a great place to use many of these things.

Here are some items I have repurposed in my garden.

Old Spoons

Old spoons can be turned into metal plant markers that won't fade and will last a life time. You can learn how to repurpose your old spoons here.

DIY metal spoon plant markers

I actually went to a thrift store to find some spoons to make into these plant markers. I love the look of them and they will outlast any wood or plastic plant marker.

Plastic Milk Jugs

Plastic milk jugs normally go into the trash, but you can use them for starting your own seeds. The winter sowing method of seed starting turns plastic jugs into tiny greenhouses for your plants.

You can learn more about winter sowing here. I have used the winter sowing method for yarrow, collards, and other plants.

If you don't have a greenhouse it's a great way to inexpensively start your own plants.

Outdoor Firepits

Old firepits can be turned into raised bed planters. I filled an old firepit with soil and turned it into an herb planter.

I was able to grow some great basil right next to the kitchen in this repurposed firepit. Just make sure your firepit has a hole for water drainage.

You could also paint your firepit to make it a great looking raised bed planter.

Decorative Trellis

Many things can be turned into a trellis like old ladders, lattice, and even decorative metal. I took this decorative metal off a door and I now use it as a trellis in my greenhouse.

Get creative and find something you could turn into a trellis. They are great for growing peas, cucumbers, and even pumpkins.

Cans and tea tins

I have turned Coffee canisters, tea tins, and cans can all into seed starting pots. Make sure to drill a hole in the bottom of the tin for drainage and watch out for any sharp metal.

You can even repurpose them with a vintage look. When plastic pots were not as popular this is how many people started their own plants.

Pallets

It's trendy to make things out of pallets, but they are a really good wood source. I made this wooden seed tray out of an old wooden pallet.

These seed trays are great for my greenhouse and they will last a long time. Here are some other ways you could repurpose pallets in the garden.

Window Screens

Window screens are great for drying seeds on. I use an old window screen to dry almost all of my seeds on.

Garden Rake Heads

I took this old garden rake head and nailed it to the wall in our shed. This made a great place to hang my garden tools.
