Have you wanted to grow more vegetables, but find yourself running out of space in your garden? Here are some space saving garden ideas helping you grow more food in less space.

My garden isn't huge and we don't have unlimited space. Because of this, I have become creative to maximize the growing capacity of my garden.
And it's not just about growing plants vertically! There are a multitude of ways to save space in the garden.
Even if you just have a patio, or a single raised bed, these tips will help you grow more food!
Grow Miniature Or Compact Plants
Growing smaller plants that are more productive uses less space to grow more food. This can be especially true if you have a container garden.
While you can grow full size plants in containers I always have heathier plants when I grow miniature varieties.

For instance, these micro tomatoes only need a 6 inch pot to grow!
In the garden there are also compact vining plants. Cucumbers, melons, and pumpkins, take up loads of space when they spread.
The bush varieties will take up less space and still give a good yield. Look for compact plants when browsing seed catalogs.
Trellises
I love having a trellis for vining crops. Trellises save space, grow better vegetables, and allow for easy harvesting.
My cucumber trellis has helped me grow the sweetest cucumbers ever! I also use the shady space under the trellis to grow lettuce throughout the summer.

In a space that would normally have just vining crops, you can grow both vines and shade loving plants!
Greenstalk Garden
I have a small hobby greenhouse and I have been trying to grow more plants in it. I knew I had to grow my plants vertically to fully use this space.
I had used a few vertical planters that were cheap, but the plants kept dying in them. I finally invested in a GreenStalk garden and I love it.

The other vertical planters didn't hold enough soil and had bad watering systems. This planter is so easy to water and my plants are thriving!
Check out the GreenStalk planters here.
Plant Closely
Spacing recommendations don't have to be followed. You will find that lettuce, cilantro, and many other plants actually thrive when planted densely.
Try growing your vegetable plants closer to each other and see how they do! When I plant densely, I get more vegetables and fewer weeds.
Make A Vegetable Planter
If you want to get really serious about maximizing your food growing space, swap your ornamental planters for vegetables.
I made this DIY vegetable planter that looks like an ornamental planter. This planter is full of green herbs, blazing red peppers, and orange tomato orbs.

Many of your favorite vegetables can be grown in containers!
Grow Plants Up Your Garden Fence
The fence around my garden doubles as a trellis. My fence is very sturdy so I plant vining crops like peas next to the fencing.

Gourds, vining flowers, and many other plants would happily grow on your garden fence! Just make sure your fence is well built and can withstand the extra weight.
