Do you want to grow your own herbs? Here are some quick growing herbs that you can plant in your garden.

Some herb plants can take awhile to grow and mature before you can harvest any herbs from them. While I really like growing perennial herbs in my garden I also like to grow herbs that mature fast.

Most of the following herb plants can either be bought as small plants or grown from seed.

Quick Growing Herbs

Grow these herb plants if you want fresh herbs fast.

Basil

Basil is a very fast growing annual herb that I think every gardener should grow. I find that my basil really starts producing well in mid summer.

Basil also does well as a potted plant and I think it doubles as an ornamental plant.

Cilantro

Cilantro (AKA coriander) is a very fast growing herb that I like to grow in my garden. I plant new cilantro seeds every few weeks for a continuous supply.

You can either buy potted cilantro or direct sow it in your garden. Cilantro will go to seed in warm weather so it does best in spring and fall gardens.

Oregano

Oregano is part of the mint family which is notorious for spreading quickly. One oregano plant can easily fill a pot!

I love growing oregano because it is care free and fast growing. I recommend growing it in pots because of its spreading habit.

Mint

Peppermint, chocolate mint, or spearmint all mint plants grow and spread fast. Mint is another plant that is easy to grow and very hard to kill.

Keep mint plants contained because they love to spread. When mint flowers it also attracts many pollinators.

Calendula

Calendula is known for its bright orange flowers and soothing properties. Calendula flower is often used to make lotions, infused oils, and salves.

Calendula can be directly sown in the garden and it will produce many flowers through the growing season. While calendula is an annual it will often reseed itself.

Dill

Dill is easy to grow from seed and makes a great companion plant for cucumbers. If you love fresh dill you should plant some in your garden.

Tips for growing herbs

Most of the above herbs enjoy full sunshine throughout the growing season. One of the benefits of growing herbs is that most of them are easy to grow.

I will plant many of these herbs throughout my garden and they thrive right alongside my vegetable plants.

I have found that basil, oregano, and mint do well in pots while the other herbs like to grow directly in the soil. If you do grow these herbs in pots make sure to buy high quality potting soil.

This year plant some quick growing herbs in your garden for a speedy harvest!
