While the garden may be dormant during the winter months there are still things you can do. Here are some winter gardening projects that will help you prepare for the gardening season ahead.

Winter is offers a nice break from taking care of the garden and I really enjoy it. While there aren't plants to take care of during the winter I do prepare for next season.

Go Through Your Seeds

Over the gardening season I am always opening seed packets and just stuffing them back in my seed box. By winter time all my seeds are very disorganized.

I also have a lot of new seeds that I have saved from my garden that need organizing. Winter is a great time to go through your seeds and get them organized. Read this post to learn the best way to store seeds.

Buy Seeds

I always buy my seeds early because I don't like seeing the varieties I want out of stock. Once you organize your seeds and plan your garden for next year, stock up on the seeds you need.

Find my favorite seed companies to buy from here.

Make Your Own Potting Soil

Seed starting season can really creep up and before you know it is time to plant tomatoes! This winter make some of your own DIY potting soil.

I have the perfect potting soil recipe you can find here. This potting soil always gives me the greenest, healthiest, and most hardy plants.

Plan For Next Year

Do you want more potatoes, how about a trellis, or maybe you want to focus on herbs. During the cold winter months get thinking about your next garden.

garden planning

I always draw my garden out on some graph paper and this helps me plan for the year ahead.

Tool Maintenance

My gardening tools get used almost everyday during the growing season. Your tools need some maintenance and care to keep them from rusting.

This winter get your tools out and do these maintenance tasks. Your tools will last longer and work better.

Make A Winter Pot

We have long winters and the only green thing outside are evergreen trees. You can bring some of that color right to your front porch.

Make a winter pot using natural materials found around your home and yard. You can learn more about making a winter pot here.

Read Some Gardening Books

I am too busy during the spring, summer, and fall to read gardening books, but come winter I really enjoy learning new gardening techniques.

Gardening books

Get some new gardening books or request some from your local library.

Make Something For The Garden

If you like working with your hands I recommend you make something for your garden. I made these wooden seedling trays for my greenhouse and I love them.

I also made these metal plant markers out of old spoons. They are fun to make and they last forever. You could also make a bird house to attract beneficial birds to your garden.

Make A Worm Bin

Worm bins house worms that can eat your vegetable scraps and turn them into worm casting fertilizer. I built one of these worm bins and you can read more about it here.

Worm bins are a great winter project and you get high quality fertilizer for your plants.

Test Your Seeds

Are you sure that all of your seeds are going to germinate when you plant them. Instead of guessing do this at home seed viability test. This test will let you know if you should plant your seeds or toss them.

This winter tackle some of these winter gardening projects and enjoy the winter weather!
